What is Pre-hab?

Within your exercise regime pre-hab exercises will strengthen the most vulnerable areas that get stressed in everyday movement and static postures. Strengthening these areas will improve posture and alignment, allowing your joints to move more efficiently. You’ll also build up your most injury-prone areas before you’re struck with chronic aches and pain that may, in the worst cases, require surgery.

However if your condition or injury is now at that stage, you have found a surgeon to replace your worn-out knees or hips, or to repair that torn cartilage, you’ve scheduled your operation, had your pre – op assessment, read all you can and talked to others who have gone before you but still, you may feel trepidation.

Will you bounce back quickly, or struggle to get on your feet again? That’s a good question. If you want a speedy recovery and an overall successful outcome, you need to compliment the skill of your surgeon by giving him or her the best canvass to work on. You can get in shape with pre-hab before your surgery.

“Fifty percent of outcome success is due to the surgeon, and the other 50 percent is due to the patient’s commitment to recovery – starting with pre-hab,” says Vonda Wright, MD, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Sports Medicine.

Effectiveness of pre-hab

A study at New England Baptist Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, all in Boston, found that knee- and hip-replacement surgery patients who had participated in water- and land-based strength training, and aerobic and flexibility exercises for just six weeks prior to their surgeries reduced their odds of needing inpatient rehabilitation by 73%.

The level of function and pain can be helped to stabilize prior to surgery. The benefits of exercise before surgery are very clear: the more you can do for yourself physically before surgery, the better off you will be.”

Back on your feet faster

Patients who are more fit prior to surgery tend to have shorter hospital stays.

The best approach to pre-hab is having a few individual sessions with physio who can tailor a package of strengthening and flexibility work for your needs to encourage the most efficient recovery rate post - surgery
