Biomechanical Assessments

Biomechanics is the science that looks at how forces act on the body. It looks at how we move and hold ourselves both statically and during activity.

At BWT we carry out in-depth biomechanical assessments on all our patients. We understand that a lot of musculoskeletal pain can be a result of faulty biomechanics. Often mal-alignment and movement deviations go undetected leading to recurrent injuries and problems.
Our bodies are designed to move in a certain way and be held in a certain position. When this becomes dysfunctional it leads to tissues being overloaded resulting in pain. For example: recurrent calf strains can often be caused by faulty foot mechanics (e.g. flat feet) or weakness in the hip musculature. Likewise, shoulder pain can occur as a result of weakness in the scapula (shoulder blade) muscles or stiffness in the upper back. A biomechanical assessment would allow these problems to be highlighted and addressed.

A detailed assessment can be especially helpful if you participate in a lot of sport. It can be used to pick up on imbalances that may hold you back from achieving your full potential or problems that may manifest as injuries in the future. BWT are already responsible for screening the High Performance Players at West Hants Tennis Club, the elite sports players at Bournemouth University and the Royal Marine Special Forces in this way.

A biomechanical assessment normally involves looking at your natural posture to pick up on any obvious abnormality or deviation and then goes on to assess the function of each individual joint. An assessment will always involve something that relates to your pastimes or sport so that abnormal patterns of movement can be isolated. At BWT we have the benefit of access to all gym equipment and a swimming pool so that if deemed appropriate sports players can be observed functionally.
