Osteoporosis is characterized by decreasing or decreased bone mineral content which causes increased bone porosity. These changes typically lead to greater risk of fractures especially during the late 30’s. Although more common among women it has also effected a percentage of the male population.
The major complications of osteoporosis include fractures of the spine, neck of the femur, and wrist. In order to reduce the risks of osteoporosis, sufferers are encouraged to exercise. Increases in bone mass can be achieved by moderate intensity levels of weight bearing and impact activities.
The osteoporosis exercise group at BWT consists of strengthening and stretching exercises to improve posture: this combats protracted head and shoulder postures. Exercises to improve balance and co-ordination which are also important to help reduce the incidence of falls and therefore reduce fractures. Pelvic and trunk stabilization exercises to increase core strength and weight bearing activities are included to facilitate the maintenance of bone mineral density. Our physiotherapists will also be able to give you advice on diet and other aspects of lifestyle to help you live with osteoporosis.
